American College Dublin. A Graduate Intern’s Perspective: Maura Haverty

It has been an extremely busy couple of weeks here at ACD! We unfortunately had to say goodbye to the first group of students we had in the first four weeks. It is always hard saying goodbye and they seemed to really enjoy themselves in Dublin! Although it was sad, there was no down time between the first group leaving and the second group arriving! Airport picks were just as chaotic as the first group, with several of our students being delayed or having their flights canceled! However, by Sunday the 15th, we had the entire group on the ground in Dublin! On their first Monday night, I took them to the Comedy Crunch, a free comedy show that is located in the basement of The Stag’s Head Pub. The show is rated number one on Trip Advisor for things to do in Dublin! It really is a great show and some of the students were even part of the act!

While the second group was beginning to settle in, I took on a new role at the college for a couple of days. I worked in the Admissions office for a week while covering for others that were on holiday. What an experience working in admissions was! I worked at the front desk and answered any calls that came into the office. Although answering all the various calls on the phone proved to be hectic at first, I really enjoyed it. My time working in admissions has really solidified the fact that I would love to continue working in this type of higher education setting. On a one day break from working at the front desk in admission last week, I was able to tag along on one of the student field trips. We hiked Bray Head which proved to be a difficult hike. However, there is a big feeling of relief and awe once you get to the top and see the view. The view from Bray Head is breath-taking and it is by far one of my favorite hikes. Although I have hiked it several times, I always find the hike challenging! The view once at the top is worth sweating over! When I am up there, I truly feel like all my worries go away! I am heading into my last two weeks being an intern at the college. I can say I have honestly enjoyed myself and have met so many great people though this experience! Stay tuned for my last blog entry which I’m sure will be an emotional one!
